Where to get B/W movie classics for free

If you like movies, you will eventually want to watch those great classics that were made during the beginning period of the movie industry. The problem is that even though most of them were in public domain, you do not know where to get them.

The first place to look for old B/W movies is Internet Archive site. They have an excellent  collection of public domain feature films, like His Girl Friday and D.O.A.

Youtube has several good movies, like Sunrise, many of which were uploaded by silentfilmdemocracy They are usually divided into 10 minutes fragments, and the picture quality is usually not very good. By the way, you can find the BBC Shakespear collection on Youtube, too. But I do not know if they are in public domain, since they are so new, and BBC still sells the DVD set online.

Veoh hosts some hard-to-find old movies, like Nanook of the North and Our Hospitality. To watch the full video, you need to install their download manager, which is a hassle.

There are blogs that provide links to old movies. 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die is a blog that is based on the book of the same title(but the blog doesn’t seem to be officially connected with the book). On this blog, you will find download links(usually of RapidShare) of many movies that are mentioned in the book. There are around 100 movies listed, and you will find many great film classics. Only Old Movies is another blog that specializes in old movies, and they have more titles.

If you have specific old movie titles that you want to find, maybe it is easiest to use filecrop. This sites find rapidshare and megaupload links. Of course, not everything that you find there is kosher, so make sure you are downloading only movies in public domain. To figure out which movie is in public domain, check this page.
