I bought Samsung Blu-ray player (BD-P1600) last year. It works okay most of the time, but I didn’t like the fact that it could only play region 2 discs.

Then I found this page that explains how to make BD-P1600 Region free. It was very easy and simple, and I wanted to share my experience.

First of all, I want to remind of you that this is not officially recommended, and if you try this method, you are on your own.

Turn off the player with no disc inside, then turn on using the remote.

After the Samsung logo appears, press the open/close button twice(that is, open and close the tray).

When you see “NO-DISC” on the machine, press the repeat button followed by the code for your region.

Mine was region 2, so I pressed REPEAT-5-7-5-3-8

After that, press 9

Turn off your machine and turn it on again.

Try a disc from different region and  see if it works.

If it doesn’t work, you may have to repeat the process again.

To return to the original setting(some discs are region sensitive), you need to return the process.

Here is what I found. First, this hack works on firmware 2.05. The original post says you will see your region no on the upper left corner, but on firmware 2.05, you do not see the number, just a few dots on that spot. Second, there is repeat button, and repeat a-b button on the remote. I don’t know which is the right button, so I tried both.

This hack is not supposed to work on region 1 models, but this page explains how to make it work on region 1 models.

Now I can play discs from other parts of the world, and I am very happy about it.
