Image Quality Difference Between DVI and D-SUB

I bought LG Flatron W2343T, a 23-inch full-HD monitor. I connected my MacBook Pro to it. Then, I bought a Blu-ray player to enjoy the full potential of the full-HD display. The problem was, since the monitor has only one DVI port, I could only connect either my laptop or the Blu-ray player at any moment. After connecting and disconnecting cables for dozens of time, it dawned on me that I had to find a solution.

First, I tried to connect my laptop to the monitor through the D-SUB port. D-Sub port is an analog port, and can be found almost universally among old monitors and projectors. With the help of a D-SUB adaptor, I could easily connect my laptop to the D-Sub port on the monitor. The picture quality was okay, and I was happy not to change cable every time I want to watch a movie. But, after a few days, I felt something was wrong. Then I connected my laptop to the monitor using DVI port. Wow, the picture quality was so much better. I could see the difference only after a few days of living in the analog world.

The solution I found was a DVI switch box. You connect the DVI cables from laptop and Blu-ray player, and connect the switch box to the monitor using a cable. When you want to switch connection, just press the appropriate button. It does not need electricity to function, so you don’t have to switch it on or off. It cost me €14.99(around $21), and I had to spend a few euros more for an extra cable. But it was worth it.

In conclusion, I think the image quality difference between DVI connection and D-SUB connection is quite obvious. I am not too visually sensitive, but the difference was very visible to me. In fact, I will be surprised if digital connection and analog connection produce the same image quality on a digital display. If you have choice go with DVI connection. And pay attention to those cheap LCD monitors that does not have DVI port. They are not really the good deal that they look like.
